Police have arrested eight people and laid 21 charges related to shoplifting since the start of the year in South Auckland suburbs.
Police said the charges involved close to $20,0000 worth of goods stolen in the Takanini, Papakura and Franklin areas.
Inspector Matt Hoyes said one group alone was believed to have stolen $9000 worth of items.
"Police and retailers cannot prevent crime alone and rely on the help of the community to stop this illegal activity and hold these offenders to account.
"We encourage members of the public to report suspicious behaviour in and around shops and malls to a member of staff, security, or police to help prevent retail theft."
Police said the arrests were just the beginning, and they would remain visible in shopping centres, with a focus on supermarkets and retail outlets.
