Some of New Zealand's top shearers are heading to Reefton on the West Coast this weekend take part in a fund-raising event for families those who died in the Pike River mining disaster.

They'll be taking part in a speed-shearing event, which organiser Gavin Rowland says could attract the greatest gathering of New Zealand's top shearers in years.

Confirmed so far are multiple world shearing champion David Fagan, world and Golden Shears champion Cam Ferguson, world lambshearing record holder and 2006 Golden Shears champion Dion King, and other record-breakers including Digger Balme, and Darin Forde.

Several shearers have donated items for a charity auction, including the singlet David Fagan wore when he took the 2009 Golden Shears title.
