West Coast mayors devise plan to solve GP shortage

West Coast mayors are devising an innovative plan to attract doctors to the region.

A long-standing shortage has left a shortage of eight GPs.

Grey District Mayor Tony Kokshoorn says the region's three mayors have formed a trust to raise money to help attract GPs.

The doctors would be paired up with a local person to help them pursue interests such as fishing and hunting, and GPs would also receive help in finding a home and car.

Mr Kokshoorn says the scheme will be funded by local authorities and will also support local students through medical school if they agree to return to the area.
