An academic says despite a recent Pacific trip by Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen, the country faces a "diplomatic time bomb" in the region.
Ms Tsai last week visited diplomatic allies Palau, Nauru and the Marshall Islands, as well as a stopover in Hawaii.
The Taiwan Strategy Research Association's Fabrizio Bozzato says fresh elections in the Solomon Islands could spell bad news for Taiwan.
But he told Mackenzie Smith the trip to Micronesia was a success for Ms Tsai.
