A young New Zealand woman holidaying in Samoa is dead and another person is missing after they were swept away in a flash flood.

Seven members of a Samoan family who live in New Zealand were caught in the flood while swimming in the Vaisigano River near Apia.

Six people were admitted to hospital but have been discharged.

Radio New Zealand's correspondent, Tipi Autagavaia says the family arrived in Samoa just two days ago.

He says it appears they were having a casual swim when the flood came out of nowhere.
