Wellington councillor John Morrison says the council will need to balance the historic importance of the Basin Reserve with the cost of fixing a grandstand that has been declared earthquake prone.
The 88-year-old Museum Stand at the cricket grounds was yellow-stickered on Friday.
An assessment is being carried out on the cost of strengthening it.
Mr Morrison, who is also a member of the Basin Reserve Trust, says it will cost about $800,000 to strengthen the stand.
A New Zealand v South Africa test is scheduled next month and about 1000 seats will be lost with the stand's closure.
