Commemoration events will go ahead in Waitangi next month after local hapū agreed to carry on with a three-day event at Te Tii Marae.
Waitangi National Trust last month cancelled all in-person events at the Upper Treaty Grounds, citing the pandemic.
But at hui last week, hapū agreed events at the lower grounds will still go ahead, albeit with restrictions and Covid-19 protocols.
Specific details are still being worked out, with another hui planned tomorrow.
Official events were held annually at Te Tii until they were transferred to the Upper Grounds in 2016.
A government spokesperson said ministers and MPs would consider any invitation, but the expectation was that MPs would attend events in their own electorates.
