Digital verification system being developed by NZ Post

New Zealand Post is working with the Department of Internal Affairs developing a digital verification system which will eventually be sold to businesses.

RealMe is a log-on system which can be used by organisations to authenticate customers into their digital services.

NZ Post is working on the identity verification service, whereby people can register online to create a profile using data like their passport number and then go to a post shop to have their photo taken and identity confirmed through the Department of Internal Affairs.

Kiwibank head of agency services Mandy Smith said the bank is working on behalf of New Zealand Post, of which it's a subsidiary, to help develop the system and says it is intended to work across both public and private sectors.

She said New Zealand Post is in talks with businesses about the system.

The system is planned to go live at the beginning of July.
