A public ferry service is being discussed as a way to ease congestion and improve transport in Queenstown.
The Otago Regional Council, Queenstown Lakes District Council and Transport Agency are exploring the business case for the ferry.
Regional council chairman Stephen Woodhead said the lake could become a natural highway for commuters.
The group is holding workshops in Queenstown and developing a draft business case.
The plan is expected to be finished in late April and will be followed by consultation.
