An investigation is underway after a man was shot and seriously injured near Matamata early this morning.

Police were called to Waghorn St in Walton just after 1.30am.
The man was found a short distance from a rural property with a gunshot injury and taken to hospital in a serious condition.
A person of interest has since been located by police and is now being spoken to.
Police say indications are that the shooting was not gang-related and the individuals were known to each other. No one else in being sought in relation to the incident.
Police are making enquiries and have conducted a forensic scene examination.
