Judge dismisses some charges in drugs trial

16:32 pm on 8 May 2013

A High Court judge has dismissed some drugs charges faced by a Tuakau man on trial in Rotorua.

Brian Read originally faced 15 counts of importing the Class A drug pseudoephedrine from Thailand and one of being part of an organised criminal group.

On Wednesday, Justice Toogood discharged Mr Read on five drug importing charges and the charge of being part of a criminal group. He still faces 10 charges of importation.

The Crown alleges that he received 10 parcels imported between June 2009 and September 2011 which contained crushed pseudoephedrine in herbal products.

Vicki Taylor, who was in a relationship with the accused, told the court that she saw two parcels arrive at his home that were picked up late at night by his brother Gary Read.

Ms Taylor said she told Brian Read that she thought it was a bit dodgy he was receiving parcels for his brother. She said he told her to mind her own business.

On Tuesday, Gary Read admitted charges of importing pseudoephedrine and methamphetamine for supply, the unlawful possession of a pistol and being part of an organised criminal group.

Gary Read's daughter, Kahsham Read, pleaded guilty to importing class B drugs.
