A special working party has been established to resolve historic grievances between the Crown and the pacifist settlement Parihaka, in Taranaki.
Parihaka became a centre of non-violent resistance following the New Zealand land wars in the 1860s, but was sacked by Government troops and militia in 1881.
Minister for Treaty Negotiations Chris Finlayson was in New Plymouth yesterday for the initialling of the Taranaki iwi's treaty settlement.
As part of that ceremony he announced that a group including former prime minister Jim Bolger and Dame Tariana Turia, among others, was working towards a resolution for Parihaka.
The working party is due to report back with its recommendations at the end of July.
