One person has died and two others are in a serious condition in hospital after an accident in Selwyn in Canterbury.
A car and van had collided on Main South Road at about 11.30pm on Wednesday.
A fourth person has minor injuries.
In the North Island, three people were seriously injured after a car hit a tree in Upper Hutt.
Police were called to the collision on California Drive in Totara Park at 12.30am on Thursday.
All three people are in hospital with serious injuries.
Police were attending the scene of a serious crash on Te Puke highway where a truck and car collided.
The crash happened at about 6.15am on Thursday. One person was in a serious condition and another had minor injuries, a police spokesperson said.
The road was down to one lane and people were advised to avoid the area if possible.
