The Fijian government said it planned to develop the industry through a research and development programme in collaboration with the Chinese government.

A senior research officer Tekini Nakidakida said there was high demand for mushrooms in Fiji especially from the tourism sector and farmers can earn a good income from the short-term crop.

About 40 farmers took part in recent training at the Legalega research station and the government says more training will be held in the Central and Northern Divisions.

Dr Nakidakida has urged the farmers to maximise the training provided by the experts from China.
