Two people have been left critically injured after a car crashed into a tree and a parked car in Palmerston North.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Napier Road in the Palmerston North suburb of Terrace End shortly before 5pm.

The police said the car hit a tree and then a parked car near the intersection with Ihle Street.

Two people have been taken to Palmerston North Hospital in a critical condition.

The police say while there were people in the parked car, none were injured.

The Serious Crash Unit is at the scene and diversions are in place.
