Samoa cabinet extends suspension of top police officers

10:14 am on 15 January 2014

Samoa's cabinet has extended the suspension of the Police Commissioner, Lilomaiava Fou Taioalo, and one of the assistant police commissioner, Seaga Uili Lafaele, until March the 2nd.

This comes after it changed the due date for the Commission of Inquiry report into allegations of abuse and misuse of power at Tafaigata prison from the end of this month to the end of February.

The findings of the commission of inquiry was supposed to be handed to the cabinet last month but extended to the end of this month however the state lawyer says the commission had requested and extension to the end of February not January 2014.

The acting police commissioner, Nafoi Talaimanu Keti, will end his two months in the current role in a week, with the assisting police commissioner and spokesperson, Fauono Talalelei Tapu, taking over until the end of the commissioner's suspension in March.
