After three days of searching for a diver off the coast in Patea, in South Taranaki, police have paused the search.
The man had not yet been found, police said on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, an extensive search was carried out by Taranaki, Whanganui and Manawatū Coastguard volunteers and Whanganui and Manawatū Surf Lifesaving.
Police said the National Dive Squad would be available when needed.
