Classes resume in some schools in Solomons capital

About half of the schools used as flood evacuation centres in Honiara in Solomon Islands are ready to resume their roles as schools.

The National Disaster Management Office says it has been working around the clock to get the flood victims to return to their homes to allow the schools to begin classes again.

The Disaster Office is working in partnership with the displaced people and the school authorities to develop a repatriation plan.

It says five schools have now re-opened for classes allowing several thousand students to resume their education.

Some other schools, such as Honiara High, have re-opened but they still have some evacuees on the grounds.

The chairman of the National Disaster Council, Melchior Mataki, says it is particularly important all schools resume classes, otherwise students are unable to receive an education.
