Two earthquakes have hit north-east of Turangi this afternoon.
Geonet said a 4.8 magnitude quake came at a depth of 5km and struck at 12.23pm.
More than 1600 people reported feeling the shake on Geonet's website.
Geonet said it may have been felt in Murupara, Ōhakune, Rotorua, Taihape, Taumarunui and Taupō.
Another 3.1 magnitude quake hit the same area at 12.29pm, but was unnoticable, according to Geonet.
It also came at a depth of 5km.
The quakes come days after a 4.2 magnitude quake hit Hawke's Bay.
