After seemingly controlling the spread of coconut rhinoceros beetle last year, Rota has discovered a new area on island where the invasive pest has thrived.
The discovery of the new infestation prompted the Rota mayor, Efraim Atalig, to declare a State of Significant Emergency regarding the beetle due to the impact on the island's agriculture.
The Department of Lands and Natural Resources said it found the new site less than seven kilometres from the original containment areas pinpointed in 2017.
It says it will work with the local authority, the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Guam, and the University of Guam to continue eradication efforts.
The department says it's critical they get co-operation from local landowners.
