A bill that would require rental homes to have smoke alarms and be insulated has passed its final reading in Parliament.
The Residential Tenancies Amendment Bill passed unanimously, though opposition parties have argued the changes don't go far enough.
Under the legislation, ceiling and underfloor insulation will have to be retrofitted in social housing by July, and in all other rental homes by July 2019.
It also toughens up the capacity for landlords to be prosecuted if they do not meet the standards.
