Victorian Premier John Brumby says state building regulations will be tightened as a result of the bushfires.
The death toll from the fires on 7 February is 209 so far, in communities northeast of Melbourne.
Mr Brumby told the Ten Network on Sunday that building controls will be tightened in fire-prone areas of the state.
The state government has established a Royal Commission of Inquiry and asked for an interim report by the 2009/10 fire season.
The government wants the full report by July 2010, so any further recommendations can be put into practice by the 2010/11 fire season.
