New Zealand dance music lost one of its pioneers last week with the death of DJ and producer Soane Filitonga.

Soane was one of the local stars of the local club scene in the 1990s and early 2000s.

A former doorman, he reinvented himself as a house DJ in Sydney. When he returned to Auckland he took on a residency at K’ Rd club Calibre and established a career that saw him tour Europe, produce club hits and remix DLT, Che Fu and King Kapisi.

DJ Greg Churchill has share the bill a fair few times with Soane over the years. He remembers his “bubbly, enthusiastic character and personality”.

“He had this ability to have this serious face that at any moment would turn into a laugh.”
