Ban plastic bags, suggests PNG environment minister

10:51 am on 6 July 2004

The Papua New Guinea Environment Minister, William Duma, says the government is working on a law that would completely ban the sale of plastic bags.

The National newspaper reports Mr Duma as saying a bill is being prepared and it will soon be introduced in parliament for endorsement.

The comments follow concerns expressed by the East New Britain governor, Leo Dion, regarding the destruction of the environment by plastic bags.

Mr Dion has recently asked what the government's doing to protect the environment.
