Our guide of where to go, what to see and what to do this weekend.
She’s So Rad: Auckland-based act She’s So Rad, aka Anji Sami and Jeremy Toy, are releasing their new album Tango this Friday, a follow-up to their well-received 2011 debut In Circles. To celebrate the release, the duo are playing the Kings Arms this Friday alongside support acts Paquin, Sea Views and Little Bark. Can’t make it and don’t want to miss out? The band will also be playing at Lot 23, for as part of a Nepal fundraiser, the following day. In the meantime, check out a stream of the band’s album below.
Red Fang: Portland heavy-rock act Red Fang head to New Zealand for the first time this weekend for two shows in Auckland and Wellington in support of their third and most recent album, Whales and Leeches. The four-piece band play the Kings Arms this Saturday and San Fran the following night, with support from Beastwars at both shows. Grab tickets over at Under The Radar.
Carb On Carb: After releasing their self-titled album back in February and wrapping up a tour of Malaysia, Singapore and Australia, Auckland-based duo Carb On Carb have been back playing in New Zealand and are nearing the end of those dates. This weekend sees them hit up Dunedin’s Chick’s Hotel with local bands Shunkan and Males and the Darkroom in Christchurch with The River Jones and Class Pictures.
Young Gifted and Broke mixtape: With some amazing Guy Brock artwork to go along with it, Young Gifted and Broke have just released, The Green Tape, a collection of “dirty bedroom demos and shit”, put together by Tom Scott. It’s much better than that might make it sound! Listen below.
Worn Out - Double Whammy: Taking place over this Friday and Saturday is Worn Out, two nights of some very good local acts playing at Auckland’s Whammy Bar. Bands include Trust Punks, God Bows to Math, The Muscle, Proton Beast, sere, Bargain Bin Laden and a bunch more. It’s $10 per night or $15 for both.
Mad Max – Fury Road: Opening today is the post-apocalyptic Fury Road, the first film to be released as part of the Mad Max franchise in 30 years that stars Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron. Judging from the trailer it’s an elaborate, big budget flick, which director George Miller (who also spent his time in between Mad Max films writing Happy Feet and Babe!) has said delivers “almost a continuous chase.” Seems about right. Watch it here.
Miss June: Auckland-based band Miss June, who just released their new EP Matriarchy, are in the midst of a tour of the country that sees them play Palmerston North’s all ages venue Great Job! on Friday with Soda Boyz and Anna Madeleine and a secret house party in Wellington alongside Hans Pucket and Maple Syrup this Saturday. Entry is $10, or $15 with a copy of the EP, and, if you live in Auckland, you can catch them at the Kings Arms when they wrap up the tour next Friday.
