Samoa have been thrashed 54-20 by Wales in their final pool match at the World Rugby Under 20 Championship in Georgia.

The Baby Manu almost scored in the second minute when centre Hunter Paisami intercepted and raced clear before being chased down.

Two penalties from full-back Ricky Pauli Ene did give Samoa an early 6-0 lead nine minutes into the match at Avchala Stadium.

But four unanswered tries in the space of half an hour ensured the Welsh went into halftime with a sizable 28-6 buffer.

Lewis-Hughes scored his second try nine minutes into the second spell to stretch their lead to 27 points before Alexander Pohla had bagged his third try of the tournament, racing down the left touchline, fending off two Welsh defenders and keeping his balance to then step and go over in the left corner just before the hour mark.

Replacement prop Setu Enoka went over from close range 10 minutes later to cut the deficit to 33-20 but Wales again finished the stronger with three more tries to run away with the game.

Samoa captain Ivan Fepuleai lamented the Manu's failure to capitalise duing key moments.

"We came here to win just like any other team. In the first 10 minutes we started very well, we had a lot of opportunities but we just couldn't take them," he said.

"The Welsh defence was very good, they brought their line speed up and we just couldn't stick to our patterns and structures and everything sort of fell apart for us.

"We're going to regroup and hopefully come away with a win from this tournament."

Samoa's next match is against Ireland on Tuesday, with the Baby Manu needing to win one of their final two games to avoid relegation back to the Junior World Trophy.

Meanwhile France will take on New Zealand and England face South Africa in the semi-finals.
