Cabinet to consider changes to copyright laws

10:13 am on 14 December 2009

The Cabinet on Monday is expected to look at proposals on how to deal with illegal downloading from the internet.

In July, Commerce Minister Simon Power called for public submissions on a three-stage plan to deal with the issue of the illegal downloading of music and movies.

It would replace Section 92A of the Copyright Act, which was dropped earlier this year.

In the past, Mr Power has acknowledged that unlawful file-sharing is costly to New Zealand's creative industries and says he is determined to deal with it through a fair and efficient process.

If Mr Power's recommendations for the bill are accepted by the Cabinet, the bill will be drafted and is likely to be introduced to Parliament next year.
