New Zealand academics have complied the world's first global invasive species list.

The register, named GRIIS, has evidence-based information on species that threaten birds, mammals and plants all over the world.

It will be a guide for countries to keep track of invasive species and protect ecosystems.

Shyama Pagad from the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Auckland is the lead author of the work and says it's been a huge undertaking.
