American Samoa's top cop resigns

American Samoa's Commissioner of Public Safety, William Haleck, has tendered his resignation.

Mr Haleck returned last night from off-island and today submitted his resignation after a meeting with the Governor Lolo Moliga.

Mr Haleck, who was a retired US Drug Enforcement Agent, has been the head of the police force since 2013.

In a memo released late this morning, Lolo has appointed Save Liuato Tuitele as the acting commissioner.

Save has been Director of the office of fraud prevention and investigations

He is a former judge and former US Army criminal investigator.

He has been serving as an advisor to DPS and had was acting commissioner early last year.
