Castleford fined for homophobic chants

14:21 pm on 30 June 2010

A decision by England rugby league officials to fine Castleford 85 thousand dollars for homophobic chants aimed at former Welsh rugby captain Gareth Thomas, has been welcomed by the player's agent.

The incident took place during a match at Castleford's home ground in a match in March.

Thomas announced he was gay in December before switching codes to play rugby league, joining the Wrexham club.

The Rugby Football League said the behaviour was unacceptable.

Thomas' manager, Emanuele Palladino, says decision is an historic one but the issue was not about the fine but rather recognising that the taunts were unacceptable.

Castleford says they'll appeal the decision.
