New Caledonia broadcaster faces strike threat over one sacking

13:41 pm on 23 March 2006

The USTKE union in New Caledonia has issued a strike warning to the public broadcaster, RFO, following the sacking of a technician.

The technician, Rock Haocas, was dismissed after a court found him guilty of assaulting a cameraman and gave him a suspended jail sentence.

Haocas had been at the centre of a dispute in 2004 when the union blocked the station for 100 days in his support.

Press reports say the USTKE union now says the sacking is unacceptable, suggesting that he could have been transferred to another section of the French public broadcaster .
