The Christchurch City Council has banned fishing off the New Brighton pier on Sundays, from today.
The move follows complaints about fishers blocking others from enjoying the pier and leaving behind fish blood and guts.
The ban is a one-year trial and covers from 10am until 5pm.
One of those who pushed for a complete ban, Southshore Residents Association deputy chairperson Lynda Burdekin, said a partial ban was a good first step.
"It does give a day when families can use the pier, and they can use all the pier, it won't be a mess, so we're quite happy to see how that works out."
She is welcoming a council decision to consider building a separate fishing platform off the end of the pier.
