EQC welcomes admission of false insurance claims

The Earthquake Commission says it is pleased a Christchurch property owner has admitted charges relating to false insurance claims for quake damage.

Krishna Rani Hazard pleaded guilty to 17 charges in the Christchurch District Court. They include using a forged document, altering a document with intent to defraud and obtaining funds by deception.

The Earthquake Commission says it began to investigate Hazard more closely when she submitted a contents claim that included a hand basin valued at $10,000.

Lawyer Andrew Riches says the reparation sought is $13,000.

But he says Hazard has also submitted legitimate claims worth $900,000 to her insurer and the Earthquake Commission. She has 10 properties.

Mr Riches said a sentencing date will be set in Christchurch District Court next week.
