MPs in the southern province of New Caledonia have voted unanimously to give extra funds to failing schools.

The newspaper, Les Nouvelles Caledoniennes, reports bonuses will be given to teachers and headteachers to have more time to lead the school and develop links with parents.

A total of US$8,500 has been earmarked for the 38 headteachers, who'll each get an extra payment of between US$78 and US$190, according the size of the school.

About 8,000 pupils stand to benefit.
