Kaymer wins Players Championship

11:42 am on 13 May 2014

The German golfer Martin Kaymer withstood an early challenge from American Jordan Spieth, a weather delay and a late wobble to clinch his second PGA Tour title with a nervy one-shot win at the Players Championship in Florida.

Kaymer, whose previous win on the US circuit was in a playoff at the 2010 PGA Championship, posted a 13-under par total.

Spieth, the 20-year-old aiming to become the youngest champion at the prestigious PGA Tour event widely regarded as the unofficial fifth major, briefly led by one shot early on in the final round before fading to finish tied for fourth at 10 under par.

Kaymer double-bogeyed the 15th hole after a weather break but managed to par the last three holes in the gathering gloom at Sawgrass.

The veteran American Jim Furyk was runner-up, with Spain's Sergio Garcia third.
