Interviews and live sets from the New Zealand music underground. This week, we check out one-man act Double Ya D.
The lair of New Zealand’s only guitar playing, crooner, man-witch, Double Ya D, can be found amongst a collection of ramshackle warehouses in the Wellington suburb of Newtown.
Playing stripped down garage-punk guitar over a drum machine and backing track synths, Double Ya D’s one-witch band rides with a posse of fantastical lone wolf acts (I Drink Your Blood, Lightning Tape Wolf, Boss Christ) associated with the excellent DIY label Stink Magnetic.
Guided there by long time collaborator (and former member of The Phoenix Foundation) Warner Emery, we caught up with the blue suited fighter of the tentacled Corporons ahead of his new release, The Right Man for The Wrong Job.
Video shot and edited by John Lake and Jonathan Shirley.
