A group working to ensure Maori get hooked up to high-speed broadband says it's proving difficult to convince everyone that marae should be used as civil defence centres.
Nga Pu Waea is pushing for marae to be used in emergencies because they're in the community, packed with mattresses and have large kitchens.
A member of the organisation, Antony Royal, says the argument to use marae for civil defence is entirely logical but it's hard work trying to make it happen.
He says there are a number of hurdles, not the least being the requirements from civil defence officials.
Mr Royal says a co-ordinated effort by Maori and marae is also needed.
