The Commerce Commission has approved Fletcher Building's purchase of road building and maintenance company Higgins Group.

The country's largest construction company will pay $315 million for the firm.

Fletcher Building has been looking to boost its local resources as it works on the Christchurch rebuild and a long list of major infrastructure projects.

Commission chair Mark Berry said the merger would not substantially reduce competition in regions where the two firms operate.
