Jurisdiction for minor offences wanted by Youth Court

05:42 am on 27 March 2011

Principal Youth Court Judge Andrew Becroft wants minor traffic and alcohol offences committed by young people to be brought under his jurisdiction.

Judge Becroft says having young people defending, for example, a speeding ticket, standing beside gang members in adult courts, runs against all established wisdom.

He says the Youth Court is a far better forum for offences that are not punishable with a jail term.

Judge Becroft believes such a change would not significantly increase the court's workload.

He has made the suggestion in a submission to a select committee considering the Criminal Procedure Bill, which is aimed at simplifying and speeding up the court process.

The Youth Court hears all other cases to do with young people, except murder and manslaughter, or when a young person chooses to have a jury trial.
