PNG makes fresh attempt to choose governor general

16:15 pm on 21 May 2004

Renewed attempts at selecting a governor general for Papua New Guinea have got under way.

Sir Paulias Matane, Sir Joseph Nombri, Sir Albert Kipalan and Sir Pato Kakaraya and the only woman in the race, Nahau Rooney, have each been endorsed by 15 MPs.

The National newspaper reports that the five contenders submitted their forms to the clerk yesterday.

The clerk of parliament, Ano Pala, will screen the proposal forms.

The clerk earlier threw out proposal forms from the four male candidates because of alleged spelling errors.

This forced Parliament to again call for nominations.

The court emphasises that all the requirements in the proposal forms must be "strictly complied in full".
