Police hear from at least 20 people after allegations of sex assault

The police in Kaitaia say they have heard from at least 20 people overnight who may have been victims of sexual assault at a backpackers' lodge in the town.

The lodge owner, Michael Harris, has been charged with indecently assaulting 16 young men aged between 18 and 25, most of them tourists, and making intimate video and audio recordings.

He faces 39 charges involving aggravated wounding, making and possessing intimate visual recordings and indecent assault.

The victims are believed to have stayed at the main residence of the Main Street Lodge, and Detective Senior Sergeant Rhys Johnston of Kaitaia police said Mr Harris's background was being investigated.
