Hutt City Council will consider putting a liquor ban around Juicy Fest to avoid "alcohol fuelled disorder and violence".

Six people were arrested for fighting and disorderly behaviour at the large festival in January.

One police officer also suffered minor injuries after being hit with a bottle.

The event, which features artists such as Akon and Ludacris, will return to Hutt Park next month - but Wellington police have tried to avoid similar disorderly scenes.

Senior Sergeant Timothy McIntosh has penned a letter to the council which requested a liquor ban around the park.

McIntosh said the event earlier this year saw large amounts of alcohol consumed on the external perimiter of the event.

"Due to the high levels of intoxication, police resources were stretched as we responded to alcohol fuelled disorder and violence."

He said a 24 hour ban on the area would allow police to ensure it remained a safe environment for people to enjoy.

The organisers of Juicy Fest have been approached for comment.

A decision on the ban will be made at a Hutt City Council meeting which starts at 1pm.
