Guantanamo detainee to be released

11:34 am on 11 January 2014

The United States says a man from Yemen, who's been held without charge for more than a decade at the Guantanamo Bay detention centre, is no longer deemed too dangerous, and can be released.

Mahmud Mujahid, 33, had been accused of being an al-Qaeda fighter and bodyguard to Osama Bin Laden.

The BBC reports he was held at the detention centre since 2002 but never formally charged.

He appeared on Thursday before a review penal convened by President Barack Obama who wants to close Guantanamo, which houses 155 men.
