The West Coast town of Fox Glacier has come to an agreement with New Zealand Post which means it can keep its post shop.
The owners, who have run the post shop for the past 18 years, have decided to move on, but no replacement could be found.
Westland's mayor Bruce Smith said New Zealand Post had been generous and agreed to set up a post shop in the town's community centre.
It will be run by a local community group.
Fox Glacier has 5000 tourists go through it daily, and if it lost the post shop, the nearest one would be at Franz Josef, more than an hour away, Mr Smith said.
