Police officer injured in attack in Northland

A police officer has been injured after he was allegedly attacked by an armed man in Northland.

Police were called to a disorder incident involving two people at a property on State Highway 12 at Waimā on Monday.

Superintendent Matt Srhoj said an officer was struck after he fell while retreating from a man who continued to advance after tasers were used.

RNZ understands the man was armed with two weapons including a machete.

The officer received moderate to serious injuries.

Hato Hone St John was notified of the incident at 7.21pm on Monday. It said two ambulances attended and one person was transported to Bay of Islands Hospital in a moderate condition.

A man is facing charges of wounding with intent and resisting police.
