MSG hopes to strike deal on labour mobility

16:25 pm on 27 March 2012

The Melanesian Spearhead Group member countries are expected to agree on a labour mobility scheme this week to allow their citizens to move freely and work within four of the Pacific's largest economies.

Fiji's interim foreign minister, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, says the scheme, which aims to source skilled labour from within the MSG region, would be a landmark achievement.

It is one of the issues to be discussed by MSG Foreign Affairs Ministers at their special meeting in Suva this week.

Ratu Inoke, who is chairing the meeting, says with the group turning 25 next year, it is a good time to look ahead and ask where else the MSG can be effective.

He said the MSG will celebrate its silver jubilee celebrations in New Caledonia next year to mark the origins of the agency which was established to spearhead independence for the indigenous people of Kanaky.
