Veteran Opposition MP in Samoa being asked to run for ruling HRPP party

11:42 am on 22 February 2010

A veteran politician and long time rival of the ruling HRPP party in Samoa is considering swopping political sides.

The former opposition leader, Le Mamea Ropati, has been asked by his village of Matautu to run for the Human Rights Protection Party in the country's general election next year.

The MP says he respects his village decision no matter what other five villages of his constituency of Lefaga and Faleaseela decide.

Le Mamea says his village was unhappy with what were considered to be dirty politics within the SDUP party he led after the 2006 general election, with several MPs including the deputy leader forcing him out of the leadership.

Le Mamea has been approached by the Tautua Samoa party to be as one of their candidates and the MP will make his final decision in April.
