The House of Representatives in American Samoa has added candidates for governor and lieutenant governor to the list of people from whom criminal checks could be required.
A bill, sponsored by Faimealelei Anthony Allen, only stipulated checks on candidates for the local House of Representatives and the delegate to the US Congress.
But checks on candidates for governor and lieutenant governor have been added at the bill's second reading.
Faimealelei said if a candidate answered "no" to a question on the nominating petition as to whether he or she has been convicted of a felony, the Election Office will not investigate further.
