Days of division within Waikato-Tainui may be numbered

The days of division within Waikato-Tainui iwi may be numbered.

The convenor of a two-day planning hui held on Turangawaewae marae this week says a challenge which former Fonterra chairman Sir Henry van der Heyden made during proceedings should be seriously considered.

Tukoroirangi Morgan says the hui, which attracted more than 700 people each day, included frank discussions on whether the tribe's current structures are relevant and addresses from a variety of business leaders.

Mr Morgan says Sir Henry challenged Waikato-Tainui to collapse its parliament and executive board and have a united body.

Mr Morgan believes it is a very good option which the iwi should consider.

He says there was unanimous agreement at the hui that the tribe has to change its ways and that a high-powered working party be established to come up with a blueprint for the future.

Mr Morgan says it will present recommendations in June to King Tuhetia.
