Among the thousands of revellers at the Wellington Sevens today there is one man who may be a little merrier than the rest.
Mika has donned his surgeon scrubs and travelled to Wellington for every sevens tournament except the first one in 2000.
He told the Dominion Post that the name of his Sevens troop, “Doctours”, is “a nod to the fact we're a bunch of boys on tour”.
Mika won a signed New Zealand sevens jersey, the chance to watch a sevens match from the sideline with a friend, and accommodation at the James Cook Hotel.
South Africa, who lead the series, are being picked at the team to beat at this year’s tournament.
Meanwhile, as Sevens fever hits Wellington, Auckland is gearing up for the Nines rugby league tournament next weekend.
In hope of having a trouble-free event the NRL is hiring 50 security guards, with three assigned to each team, at a cost off $100,000, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.
The newspaper understands that a police officer will also be stationed at each team’s hotel throughout the weekend.
Popular nightclubs around the city have also been given contact details for officials from each club, and from the NRL, should there be any trouble.
About 22,000 fans from outside Auckland are expected to travel to the city for the tournament, including 7000 from Australia.
